Senator Marco Rubio has announced that the Trump administration is nearing the completion of a deal to acquire between 30 million and 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil. The plan is to sell this oil at market prices and utilize the revenue to aid Venezuela’s transition to a new government.
“Ultimately, the transformation of Venezuela will be in the hands of its people, although this will indeed be a transitional process,” Rubio stated.

According to Rubio, the U.S. strategy for Venezuela encompasses phases of stabilization, recovery, and transition. This multi-step approach aims to support the South American nation as it navigates its future.
In related developments, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright indicated that the United States intends to maintain control over the Venezuelan oil industry for an unspecified period. This control is part of broader efforts to manage and secure energy resources in the region.
Seizure of two more oil tankers
Its foreign ministry urged US officials to allow the swift return of Russian crew members from the ship, but White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told journalists they may be taken to the US for prosecution.
Leavitt said the US deemed the ship to be stateless.
Homeland security chief Kristi Noem posted on X that both vessels “were either last docked in Venezuela or en route to it” and included a video of armed US forces rappelling down from a helicopter onto an unidentified ship.
Democrat criticises ‘insane plan’
Brian Finucane, of the International Crisis Group, said the seizure of ships fitted the “overarching theme, both with respect to Venezuela and how this president approaches foreign policy in general, of taking the oil, quite literally in this case”.
