A Georgia man, not permitted to leave his home, was arrested following the tragic death of his girlfriend’s infant.

Willie George Northern Jr., 24, was under house arrest in Houston County, Georgia, yet found himself tasked with caring for his girlfriend’s 6-month-old son, Myles, at her residence in Bibb County, over 30 miles away. Following the baby’s death on Tuesday, Northern now faces charges linked to the incident, according to authorities.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office reported that Northern was responsible for Myles while the child’s mother was at work on Monday. He stated that he had fed and swaddled the baby before putting him to bed. Upon checking on Myles later, he found the baby “unresponsive” and contacted emergency services. Paramedics rushed Myles to a children’s hospital for urgent care.

At the hospital, medical personnel noted the infant’s “severe injuries” and subsequently airlifted him to another facility due to his critical condition. As detailed in court records reviewed by local CBS station WMAZ, Myles had endured multiple brain bleeds and a fractured collarbone.

Law enforcement concluded that Northern was likely responsible for the injuries, leading to his arrest on charges of child cruelty and evidence tampering.

After Myles succumbed to his injuries the following day, Northern was charged with murder.

According to WMAZ, Houston County District Attorney Eric Edwards confirmed that Northern was under house arrest at his home in Kathleen, Georgia, which is more than 30 miles from his girlfriend’s house in Macon. Northern would have had to get the permission of a judge to travel outside Houston County, which he allegedly did not.

Bibb County officials noted that Northern was wearing an ankle monitor when they encountered him. It was not immediately clear if Northern would face additional charges for allegedly violating house arrest.

Northern was charged with murder, cruelty to children, and tampering with evidence, and is in custody at the Bibb County Jail.
