In a shocking incident in Florida, a man reportedly approached another while he was gardening in his backyard and fatally shot him in the back of the head. Authorities are describing this as a “random act of violence.”

Isaac Toye, aged 29, faces charges of second-degree murder following the death of 64-year-old Harold Whitt Harper in Ocala. According to reports from the police, officers were initially alerted around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday due to concerns about a suspicious individual on the 900 block of SE 3rd Street. A witness reported seeing a man attempting to flag him down, later noticing that the individual was loading a firearm.

While officers were en route to the location, another emergency call came in, reporting a shooting nearby. Upon arrival, police discovered Harper lying in the front yard, where paramedics later confirmed his death.

Toye was apprehended by police not far from the crime scene.

Harper’s family shared with investigators that he was passionate about gardening. Despite recently undergoing neck surgery that had hindered his ability to garden, Wednesday marked one of the first days he felt up to the task, spending time pulling weeds. Harper’s wife had just returned home from grocery shopping and was inside unloading her purchases. Meanwhile, his son-in-law noticed Toye walking through the neighborhood and decided to keep watch. Tragically, moments later, a gunshot echoed through the air.

Family rushed outside where they found Harper. A neighbor told cops she heard Harper’s wife screaming “My husband’s dead,” according to the affidavit.

Detectives have been unable to establish any ties between Harper and Toye. Cops believe it was a “random act of violence.”

Mayor Ben Marciano said his heart goes out to the family of the victim.

“We are going to be working very hard to make sure justice is served,” he said.

Marciano also credited the person who initially called cops when seeing Toye with a gun.

“It was someone’s quick thinking and call to the police that helped capture the murder suspect within moments,” he said.

Neighbor Joan Zoeller told local ABC affiliate WCJB that Harper was well known for gardening.

“He is a wonderful neighbor,” she said. “His passion was gardening, and that’s what he loved to do. He kept his yard well-groomed all the time, and he loved the outdoors. Just a very, very nice man. Always says hello to anybody.”
