Ricardo Garcia, a prominent criminal defense attorney based in Los Angeles, California, currently serves as the public defender for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s office. This office is notably the largest and oldest of its kind in the United States. In October 2018, Garcia made history by becoming the first Latino to hold this position in Los Angeles County.
Garcia embarked on his legal journey in 1995 with the San Diego Public Defender’s Office. By 1998, he had joined the Alternate Public Defender’s Office, distinguishing himself as its youngest attorney at the time.
In 2004, Garcia took on the role of Director of Criminal Justice for the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California. Between 2007 and 2009, he led the South Bay Branch of the Alternate Public Defender’s Office. His outstanding commitment to defending the indigent was recognized in 2008 with the prestigious Dale Melvin Ray Memorial Award.
Garcia joined the Multiple Conflicts Office – Major Cases in February 2009, a specialized unit renowned for handling intricate homicide cases and capital case defendants within the Public Defender’s Office. He served as a supervisor in this esteemed office until 2017.
In 2015, the Criminal Defense Association of San Diego honored Garcia as Trial Lawyer of the Year. His academic contributions include serving as a guest lecturer and adjunct professor at California Western School of Law, where he participated in the Criminal Justice LLM and Acceso programs. These roles took him to countries like Mexico, Chile, and Peru, where he imparted knowledge and training to judges, prosecutors, and defense lawyers. Additionally, Garcia was a faculty member at the Bryan R. Shechmeister Death Penalty College at Santa Clara University School of Law.

García received his Bachelor of Art in politics and Latin American studies in 1991 from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 1995 from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law, and was admitted to the State Bar of California in December 1995.
