Rotta the Huttlet made his debut in the 2008 animated feature “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which paved the way for the acclaimed series sharing its name. While every “Star Wars” enthusiast is familiar with the notorious Tatooine crime lord Jabba the Hutt, many might not be aware of the longstanding influence of the Hutt species. Voiced by Jeremy Allen White from “The Bear” in the upcoming film “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” Rotta is actually Jabba the Hutt’s offspring.
In “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” Rotta becomes a pawn in a kidnapping plot orchestrated by Count Dooku and the separatists during sensitive negotiations between the Republic and the Hutts. Jedi Anakin Skywalker and his apprentice Ahsoka Tano heroically rescue Rotta, thwarting Dooku’s sabotage. At this point in the saga, Rotta is just a Huttese toddler—affectionately nicknamed “Stinky” by Tano—and is the apple of his father’s eye. Due to his young age and small size, Anakin is able to carry him on his back during their daring escape.
Details about Rotta’s life post-Clone Wars remain scarce, though it’s known he survived into the New Republic era, sticking by his father’s side throughout the conflict. His connections to pivotal storylines make him an intriguing addition to “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” slated for a 2026 release. A recent teaser revealed a scene featuring a notably muscular Hutt at the heart of a brightly lit arena—this is Rotta, matured into a formidable gladiator. The scars marring his face hint at numerous battles fought along his journey.
Rotta is poised to become a crucial link for Din Djarin and Grogu as they navigate the Huttese power struggle that emerged after Jabba’s demise in “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.” With his early ties to Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, fans hope Rotta will lean towards ally rather than adversary, although much can change from childhood to adulthood. Interestingly, unlike the sluggish Hutts of cinema past, Rotta shows remarkable agility. As Jeremy Allen White disclosed on “The Graham Norton Show,” Rotta is “swift” and “broader” than the typical Hutt.
The Mandalorian and Grogu — and Rotta
Not much is known about Rotta’s life following the Clone Wars, only that he was alive as the galaxy shifted into the New Republic era and that he spent the duration of the war alongside his father. However, he still has interesting ties to the main storylines of the franchise, so he’s a perfect choice to be included in “The Mandalorian & Gorgu,” which will be released in cineplexes in 2026. In a recent teaser trailer, fans spotted a shot of an incredibly muscular Hutt occupying the center of a lit arena — this is Rotta the Hutt, all grown up and apparently working as a gladiator. The scarring on his face suggests that he’s been in his fair share of battles by the time we catch up with him.
Rotta will likely be an essential connection for Din Djarin and Grogu as they work to stabilize the Huttese power vacuum that arose following Jabba’s death in “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.” Hopefully, Rotta will serve as more of an ally than an enemy, given the early bond he built with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, but a lot can change about a person between infancy and adulthood. What’s interesting is that, unlike other Hutts we’ve seen on the big screen, Rotta is apparently very spry. “Rotta can move quickly,” Jeremy Allen White confirmed during an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” adding that he’s “broader” than your average Hutt.
