How Nick Kyrgios could have a VERY awkward moment with his ex Costeen Hatzi

Nick Kyrgios is gearing up for his much-anticipated return to the Australian Open next week.

Interestingly, there is a slim possibility that he might cross paths with his former flame, Costeen Hatzi.

Kyrgios and Hatzi started their relationship in 2021, but by last May, The Herald Sun reported that their romance had quietly come to an end.

“I cherished our connection and believed it was something special. Now that I’m not on the road, I have the freedom to pursue my own interests and be fully present,” Hatzi shared.

During their time together, the social media influencer, who boasts 175,000 followers on Instagram, was a familiar presence at Kyrgios’ matches worldwide, often spotted supporting him from the stands.

On Monday, Hatzi revealed to her followers during an Instagram Q&A that she was heading down to Melbourne Park to watch the tennis. The social media star added that she would be experiencing the tennis a little differently this year, having partnered with a fashion and beauty brand for the event.

‘Will you be going to the Australian Open this year?’ one fan asked.

‘Yes, absolutely!’ Hatzi replied. ‘I’m heading off at the end of the week and can’t wait to experience the Australian Open in a new light.’

‘I’m going with some incredible Australian fashion and beauty brands (and of course watching a little tennis too).’

The couple began dating in 2021, with Kyrgios having previously revealed that they had met when he came to pick up a mirror from her that she had been selling on social media. Hatzi had said that it had been ‘love at first sight,’ with the pair going public on their relationship in 2022.

Since their split, Kyrgios has been focusing hard on getting back to full fitness, with the Australian having been plagued by a raft of injuries since he finished as a runner-up in the men’s singles at Wimbledon in 2022.

Questions had been bubbling away over whether Kyrgios would be offered a wildcard to play in the men’s singles at the Australian Open next week.

However, the Aussie turned down an offer to play in the men’s singles, with Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley reasoning that Kyrgios had made the ‘right decision’, noting that he was still struggling with injuries and form.

It came as Kyrgios had crashed out of the Brisbane International last week, before making a sad admission that surgeries on a knee injury and a wrist ligament injury had ‘dragged him down’.

Despite that, Kyrgios looks set to still play in the men’s doubles this year at Melbourne Park.

‘After some good conversations with (Tennis Australia), I’ve made the call to focus on doubles at this year’s AO,’ he said on social media on Friday.

Kyrgios, who recently beat women’s No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Battle of the Sexes exhibition clash, added: ‘I’m fit and back on court, but five-setters are a different beast and I’m not quite ready to go the distance yet.

‘This tournament means everything to me, but I’d rather give my spot to someone who’s ready to make their moment count. It’s all building blocks and I’ll be back next year and pumped to compete.’

Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley told Channel 9: ‘We work closely with Nick’s team. It was a decision way before the start of the summer that if he felt ready to play a three-out-of-five set match… and if he felt he wasn’t ready for that then he was going to make the decision not to accept a wildcard.

‘Right decision, in my view. I watched him play his singles and his doubles and you need to be 100 per cent to go out there and compete and he’s doing the right thing for his body if he’s going to play this year.

‘And he’s certainly going to play. He’s going to play doubles with Thanasi and he’ll make a decision about mixed doubles as well.’

He added: ‘I’d love to see him on the singles court and I know he would like to be there, but he’s had a rough go of it with injuries.

‘At some point we’ll see him… in some form.’

Last year, Kyrgios took to the court with his good friend and fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis, but the pair were forced to retire in the middle of their first match, with Kokkinakis suffering a pectoral injury.

In February, Kokkinakis had a dead person’s Achilles tendon attached to his right pectoral muscle and shoulder.

He was the first tennis player to undergo such a surgery and made his competitive return in doubles with Kyrgios last week at the Brisbane International.

After going under the knife and racing back in time to be fit for the summer swing, Kokkinakis, 29, returned on Monday to feature in his first singles match in a year.

He took on Sebastian Korda at the Adelaide International, and sealed a 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

However, things did not look good for the home favourite who battled through pain to seal the victory.

Kyrgios will have been concerned by the nature of his doubles partner’s victory, with Kokkinakis seen receiving medical treatment throughout the match, casting further doubt on any appearance at the Australian Open starting on Sunday.

The 29-year-old has a protected ranking to enter the singles at Melbourne Park and if fit, is due to also reunite with Kyrgios as the ‘Special K’s’ take to the court again in the men’s doubles.

Kokkinakis, meanwhile, insisted he was determined to return to action on Wednesday in Adelaide.

‘We are so far away from the courts tomorrow. I am going to be put on ice, try and take the strongest painkillers, and see as many physios as I can,’ he said.
