In an alarming turn of events, newly released surveillance video captures the intense moment a Marion County sheriff’s deputy was shot while sitting in his patrol car. This dramatic incident unfolded back in June on S. Highway 441, setting off a chain of events that could have ended far more tragically.
The incident began when the deputy pulled over 22-year-old Rheanna Harden. During the stop, she was arrested on multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine and marijuana, having drug paraphernalia, providing false identification, and driving with a suspended license. It seemed like a routine arrest until things took a dangerous twist.
As Harden was being transported to the Marion County Jail, she managed to free one of her hands from the cuffs and opened the plexiglass partition that separated her from the deputy. This surprising move, detailed in an arrest affidavit, set the stage for the violent confrontation that followed.
In the tense footage, Harden can be seen removing her visor to obscure the rear seat camera. What happens next could have been lifted straight from a crime thriller: she produced a concealed handgun and fired multiple shots through the partition at the unsuspecting deputy.
The quick-thinking deputy returned fire, and amid the chaos, the patrol vehicle crashed into a utility pole. Remarkably, despite the harrowing exchange, both Harden and the deputy escaped with non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly taken to local hospitals for treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.
A revolver with six spent shell casings was recovered at the scene near where Harden was removed from the vehicle, deputies said.
Harden ended up receiving an additional charge of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.
Her next court date is Jan. 29.
