In a tragic incident near Temple University, Philadelphia, a teenager was found dead in the restroom of a Chipotle restaurant. The victim, identified as 16-year-old Khyon Smith-Tate, was discovered on Monday evening.

Philadelphia police have confirmed that Smith-Tate was fatally shot. In relation to this case, authorities are currently on the lookout for three potential suspects, all of whom are believed to be teenage boys aged between 16 and 17. As of now, no arrests have been made.

The unsettling discovery occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. at the Chipotle located in North Philadelphia. The investigation is ongoing as police work to gather more information and bring those responsible to justice.

No arrests have been made.

The discovery was made around 5:15 p.m. Monday at a Chipotle in North Philadelphia.

Police said the teen, who was shot in the chest, was found by a restaurant employee.

“We’re getting information that the 16-year-old victim was inside with at least one other juvenile male. They asked for keys to the restroom, and that’s when they both went in,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The victim was pronounced dead inside the bathroom, according to police.

“Not only did we find the victim in the bathroom, we found one spent shell casing. So, at least one shot was fired from a semi-automatic weapon,” Small said.

It was the first day back from winter break at Temple University. Police say the Chipotle was very crowded at the time of the shooting.

“A lot of students eat here. A lot of people gather at Chipotle,” Temple senior Chikondi Rose said.

“The loss of life to gun violence is a profound tragedy, and there are no words that can make sense of it. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones,” Temple University said in a statement. “This is, of course, deeply upsetting and took place adjacent to our campus in a commercial establishment. We encourage students who are impacted to seek support through Tuttleman Counseling Services.”

Students say they were surprised to return to school and then get a TU alert about a shooting.

“It’s really sad to hear. I mean, a young person like that being found in the bathroom, that’s not something you hear often,” freshman Finn Glenn said.

Anyone with information can call or text Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online.
