In a bizarre twist on a classic prank, a seemingly harmless act of egging a house nearly escalated into a tragic incident in Florida. Authorities report that an 18-year-old man fired a gun at his former girlfriend and her companion, claiming they aimed a “green laser” at him during the confrontation.

Jason Rodriguez (Miami-Dade Corrections).

The incident unfolded in Hialeah, where police officers were called to a local hospital around 2 a.m. A young woman had arrived with a bullet wound in her arm, alleging that the injury occurred after she and her friend decided to throw eggs at her ex-boyfriend’s apartment. As they attempted to flee the scene, the ex-boyfriend, identified as Jason Alejandro Rodriguez, purportedly fired multiple rounds at their vehicle, striking the woman.

Law enforcement soon arrived at Rodriguez’s residence. During a Mirandized interview, he confessed to discharging his weapon at the car. Rodriguez explained that he had heard a disturbance outside and armed himself before heading out to investigate. According to his account, the pranksters assaulted him with an egg and a rock. As they sped away, he claimed to perceive a green laser trained on his body.

In response to this perceived threat, Rodriguez allegedly opened fire, resulting in the injury to his ex-girlfriend’s friend.

That’s when he allegedly opened fire at the car, hitting his ex’s friend.

Detectives obtained video that showed the entire incident — and it proved Rodriguez’s version of events didn’t hold up, cops say. The video showed Rodriguez was never hit by a rock or egg, nor was there any “green laser,” per the affidavit. It also revealed he used his phone flashlight to find the shell casings and pick them up, cops said.

“Based on the investigation conducted, the defendant provided an inaccurate statement to police where he attempted to justify the shooting; where the video clearly depicts he shot at the vehicle as it sped off and did not pose a threat to him and/or anyone,” detectives concluded.

Rodriguez faces charges of attempted murder and shooting into a vehicle. He is being held at the Miami-Dade County Jail without bond.
