Witherspoon’s cautionary note coincides with an increase in Instagram users receiving unexpected “reset your password” notifications.

WASHINGTON — Have you been contacted by Reese Witherspoon on Instagram? Chances are, it’s not the real deal.

The star of “The Morning Show” alerted her audience on Tuesday regarding the surge of impersonators on TikTok and Instagram. Through an Instagram story, Witherspoon reached out to her followers, advising them to be wary of individuals posing as her to forge connections.

“I want to share what I’ve been experiencing over the past day,” Witherspoon explained. “There are several impersonators on TikTok and Instagram pretending to be me. They slide into people’s DMs, attempting to foster relationships. They aim to gather personal details and arrange meetings. Please know, this isn’t me.

“It’s incredibly distressing that someone would exploit my identity to deceive others,” she added. “I assure you, I would never exploit or manipulate you. I would never contact you seeking money, private information, or to set up a meeting.”

“So please look at these accounts that are doing this and make sure they’re verified,” she said. “This is not just me. This is happening across the board, but it’s really upsetting to me that this is happening on such a large scale. So please be careful out there, and please know I would never, never reach out to you to manipulate you or take anything from you.”

Witherspoon’s warning comes as Instagram users have been reporting unsolicited “reset your password” emails.

Over the past several days, users have taken to social media and forums to report receiving legitimate-looking password reset emails from Instagram, sparking concern that their accounts were being hacked or targeted. Many said the emails appeared to come directly from Instagram’s official domain and were not phishing attempts.

Instagram on Tuesday acknowledged the issue and said it was caused by an external party exploiting a flaw in its password reset system.
