Yankees acquiring Ryan Weathers in trade with Marlins

The Yankees have welcomed the offspring of a former team member, though not Cody Bellinger just yet.

The team is set to acquire left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers from the Marlins in exchange for a quartet of prospects: outfielders Dillon Lewis and Brendan Jones, along with infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus. This information was confirmed by sources to The Post on Tuesday night.

Ryan Weathers, 26, whose father David Weathers once donned the Yankees uniform, enhances the team’s pitching roster. He provides strategic flexibility for the Yankees, as he still holds a minor league option.

Weathers offers value not only as a starter but also with his bullpen experience, which, combined with his minor league option, gives the Yankees additional maneuverability.

This acquisition comes at a crucial time, as the Yankees are beginning the season with Carlos Rodón, Gerrit Cole, and Clarke Schmidt sidelined due to injuries. Eventually, these pitchers will return, necessitating adjustments to the rotation.

Weathers made 24 starts over the last two seasons for the Marlins, posting a 3.74 ERA with 117 strikeouts in 125 innings. In between, he dealt with a forearm strain and a lat strain, which forced him to miss time on the injured list.

The Yankees had tried for another Marlins starter, Edward Cabrera, before he was traded to the Cubs and also had interest in the Brewers’ Freddy Peralta and the Nationals’ Mackenzie Gore.

But they ended up with Weathers, who likely came at a lower prospect cost than the others while offering some upside and three years of team control.

Weathers will have a chance to break camp in the rotation alongside Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil and Will Warren, with swingman Ryan Yarbrough also in the mix if needed.
