Oprah Winfrey recently opened up about her weight loss journey during an appearance on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle, where she shared her experiences with GLP-1 weight loss medications. She spoke candidly about both the “freedom” these drugs have offered her and the less pleasant side effects that come along with them.
During her visit, Winfrey was there to promote her latest book, Enough: Your Health, Your Weight, and What It’s Like to Be Free, alongside her co-author, Dr. Ania Jastreboff. The discussion took an intriguing turn when the hosts, Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones, learned how Winfrey manages the side effects associated with the medication.
Dr. Jastreboff explained to the audience that common side effects of these weight loss drugs include nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. In response, Winfrey shared, “I never had nausea or diarrhea, but I did have the third one.”
Winfrey elaborated on how she tackled this issue, saying, “I finally figured out, for me, what the right combination of magnesium and water is. I have to drink a lot of water.”
Curious about the specifics, Sheinelle Jones asked, “Like how much water?” signaling a genuine interest in Winfrey’s personal solution.
Winfrey revealed that she has to drink a gallon of water every single day, prompting Jones to jokingly throw her cards on the table in shock. According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s recommended that men drink 3.7 liters of fluids a day, while women should drink 2.7 liters a day.
“Luckily, we have new mugs!” Bush Hager commented as she and Jones showed off their new Today With Jenna & Sheinelle mugs. Jones even offered Winfrey a mug for all of the water she apparently has to drink everyday.
But that’s not all. Winfrey also revealed: “I have to drink a gallon of water before four o’clock.”
“Stop it!” Jones responded in shock, as Dr. Ania Jastreboff noted Winfrey’s kidneys “are very, very happy” with her routine.
Winfrey spoke at length about her “transformational” weight loss on Today.
“This has been transformational for me,” she told Jones and Bush Hager. “The new freedom is understanding that all those years that I suffered, and was on the tabloids every week and made fun of, and was the butt of everybody’s jokes, and I thought it was because of my lack of willpower.”
While she used to wonder, “What is wrong with me that I can be successful in so many ways and I can’t conquer this thing?” Winfrey revealed the medication helped her realize, “Now I know it has nothing to do with my willpower, it has everything to do with your biology.”
Today with Jenna & Sheinelle airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
