Carrollwood Tragedy: Woman Convicted of Sister's Murder and Backyard Burial

In Tampa, Florida, a jury has found a woman guilty of killing her sister, whose remains were discovered buried just two feet deep in the backyard of their Carrollwood residence in May 2021.

Debra Patton faced charges of second-degree murder and was swiftly convicted as her trial commenced in Hillsborough County this week, according to the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office.

The trial for the Carrollwood resident accused of murdering her sister and concealing her in the yard has begun.

Investigators revealed that Patton fatally shot her sister, Karen Pais, in the chest before burying her. The grim discovery was made by Hillsborough County deputies on May 31, 2021, after they were called to the shared home on Cypress Park Street to investigate Pais’s disappearance, as she had not been heard from in several days.

The revelation that Patton was the primary suspect stunned many in the usually serene Carrollwood neighborhood.

Friends provided more insight into the sisters’ fractured relationship, explaining that Pais and Patton had shared the home for a decade but eventually grown apart. Even so, Pais refused to kick her sister out of the house, despite her friends urging her to do so.

One long-time friend, Pam Nelson, recalled Pais saying, “If I go missing or I’m found dead, tell them my sister did it.”

Nelson was who asked the sheriff’s office to perform a welfare check at the home after Pais abruptly stopped returning her calls.

“She was a nice person, a good person, a happy person. She didn’t deserve this,” Nelson said back in 2021.

Patton is expected to be sentenced for the murder in February.
