Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has addressed his son Abba Abubakar’s decision to switch political allegiance, emphasizing that it reflects a personal choice rather than any familial or political rift.
Abba Abubakar joins APC amid political realignment
In a statement posted on X on Thursday, Atiku stated, “My son Abba Abubakar’s move to join the APC is a personal decision. In a democratic society, these choices are common and should not be seen as alarming, even when they involve family members and politics.”
Abba Abubakar, known simply as “Abba,” officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a ceremony at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday.
He was welcomed into the APC by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, along with other party leaders from the North-East geopolitical zone.
During the event, Abba declared his resignation from the PDP and committed to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027.
“With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027. To this effect, I’m directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu,” he said.
Atiku stresses governance over family politics
Atiku, however, stressed that his primary concern remains governance and the state of the nation.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said, adding, “I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.”
Abba’s defection also included the renaming of his political network from the Haske Atiku Organisation to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, signalling full alignment with the ruling party.
