COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. () – On Thursday, the Columbia County Planning Commission convened a public hearing to discuss two proposed data center projects, inviting residents to share their perspectives.
The first project plans to occupy nearly 1,000 acres situated between Lonergan Hulme Road and Nature’s Way, nestled between Appling and Grovetown. The second project is even more ambitious, proposing over 3,000 acres just across Appling Harlem Highway, extending towards Morris Callaway Road and near the Amazon facility.
Residents voiced a slew of concerns, including potential impacts on property values, environmental issues, and noise pollution, expressing frustration with the commission’s handling of decisions.
“Not one resident supported these data centers, and the vote happened so swiftly that they didn’t take our opinions into account,” remarked Jake Pollard, a local resident. “Numerous issues were highlighted by the community regarding these projects. There’s another meeting scheduled for February 3rd, which is the commissioner’s meeting—everyone should attend and make their voices heard.”
Ultimately, the commission proceeded to approve the rezoning for the data centers.
The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 3, 2026.
