The much-anticipated Season 4 of The Traitors premiered last week, delivering three thrilling episodes that captivated its audience. A significant twist was introduced by host Alan Cumming, who announced the presence of a “Secret Traitor,” a role concealed even from the other Traitors.
Unfortunately, the twist didn’t last as planned. The individual chosen to be the Secret Traitor was eliminated by the third episode. According to insiders, this twist was not well-received, and there’s speculation that including it was a misstep.
As detailed by The US Sun, the show’s production team revealed that the Secret Traitor element was intended to play a more prominent role throughout the season. Viewers of the initial episodes learned that contestant Donna Kelce was identified as the Secret Traitor and was subsequently voted off by Episode 3.
Production Admits The Secret Traitor Twist Wasn’t Well Done
As reported by The US Sun, sources involved with the show’s production noted that the Secret Traitor twist was supposed to last for much longer in the show. Those who watched the first few episodes of the show will know that it was cast member Donna Kelce who was found out as the Secret Traitor and successfully banished in Episode 3.
The source noted with regret that, watching it back, the twist wasn’t a good call on their part:
To be honest… to be blunt, [the twist] was a mistake. Watching it back now, watching the audience response to it… it was a colossal mistake. [It was] a huge miscalculation on production’s part.
Their Choice Of Traitors May Also Be A Mistake
That wasn’t all that the inside source said they regretted. Apparently, there’s also talk that the cast members who were chosen to be this season’s Traitors was a poor choice as well.
In past seasons, the Traitors have usually been selected from a variety of backgrounds. That is, often there’s one individual from The Real Housewives franchise and one person from a more strategy-based show like Survivor or Big Brother.
This time, however, not a single one of the Traitors came from a “gamer” background, making it a first in the show’s history. In the aforementioned conversation, the production source shared that this wasn’t something they’d be repeating in future seasons:
Producers saw a little area for opportunity, with the gamers always being picked as the Traitors. But the show made a massive overcorrection to that problem. Picking all the NBC stars as Traitors and not the gamers is something that will not happen again. Absolutely not.
As of this article’s writing, five episodes of Season 4 have been released. Only time will tell if the non-gamer Traitors can make it to the end of the competition.
