In California, authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the 2001 murder of a woman from Victorville. The victim vanished while working at a Mervyn’s department store, and her body was discovered two days later.

Raymond Gonzales, now 51, faces charges for the murder of Suzanne Sites-Fenton, which occurred on April 14, 2001, according to an announcement by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. For more details, you can view the department’s statement here.

The case began when Suzanne Sites-Fenton’s husband reported her missing after she failed to return home from her shift. Her car was located abandoned the following day, with signs of a struggle inside, as per the sheriff’s department’s findings.

Two days after her disappearance, on April 16, Sites-Fenton’s body was found in a remote area of Hesperia. An autopsy revealed she had been shot, and investigators concluded she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted before being killed.

Detectives learned that Sites-Fenton had left the store during a break, heading into the parking lot, and never returned, which marked the last time she was seen alive.

Authorities did not say what led them to the suspect or whether he and his victim knew one another before the rape and murder.

Gonzales was arrested on Thursday and is beng held at the High Desert Detention Center without bond.

He is due in court on January 20, the Victorville Daily Press reported.
