Marc Lemieux, officially known as Marc C. Lemieux, currently serves as a judge at the Superior Court in Monmouth County. Since June 2023, he has held the position of assignment judge for the Monmouth Vicinage. His appointment as the leading judge of the county was made by New Jersey Chief Justice Stuart Rabner, following the untimely passing of Assignment Judge Lisa P. Thornton. Judge Thornton left a legacy of 15 years on the bench, with nine of those years in her role as assignment judge, before her passing on May 26, 2023, at the age of 59.
Reflecting on the impact of Judge Thornton’s loss, Chief Justice Stuart Rabner remarked, “The Monmouth Vicinage and the State Judiciary lost a true leader. We deeply miss Judge Thornton’s unwavering spirit, and we are certain that her influence and vision will continue to shape the vicinage’s work for many years ahead.” In announcing Lemieux as Thornton’s successor, Rabner added, “In selecting the next assignment judge, we cannot replace Judge Thornton. Our goal is to proceed with the same level of commitment to service that defines the Monmouth Vicinage. I am confident that Judge Marc Lemieux will fulfill this noble mission.”
Judge Lemieux expressed his sentiments on his new appointment, stating, “I am humbled to take on this new role. Judge Thornton was a close friend and an exemplary professional. We will strive diligently to honor her legacy.”
Judge Lemieux began his judicial tenure after being nominated by former governor Chris Christie, joining the bench in August 2017. Initially, he served in the civil division of the Monmouth Vicinage. In July 2019, he transitioned to the criminal division, where he was appointed as presiding judge in September 2021.

Prior to joining the bench, Judge Lemieux was a career prosecutor, starting out in the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s office as a law clerk in 1996. He served in positions of assistant prosecutor, head of the prosecutor’s family division, head of the major crimes bureau and director of investigations before becoming second in command of the office as first assistant prosecutor in 2014.
Judge Lemieux earned his undergraduate degree from Trenton State College, now known as The College of New Jersey, and his law degree from Widener University School of Law. He is a member of the Monmouth Bar Association.
