A retired priest, once associated with various parishes in Chicago and its northern suburbs, is under scrutiny for an alleged incident of sexual abuse involving a minor in India. The Archdiocese of Chicago disclosed these details, spotlighting Father Denis Manuel Carneiro, a retired priest from the Archdiocese of Bhopal, India.
Cardinal Blase Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, informed local parishes through letters that the allegations date back approximately 60 years and pertain to events in India. Father Carneiro’s ties to the Chicago area were outlined in the correspondence.

In his letters, Cardinal Cupich listed the parishes where Father Carneiro was previously a resident, along with the periods he served there:
Additionally, Father Carneiro held a position as chaplain at Ascension St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, from 1999 to 2002, according to Cardinal Cupich.
“In line with our child protection policies, I have revoked Father Carneiro’s authority to minister and instructed him to vacate parish premises. Although he vehemently denies the accusation, he has adhered to this directive. We have informed the Archdiocese of Bhopal, who is tasked with investigating the allegation,” the letter from Cardinal Cupich stated. “Furthermore, as per our child protection protocols, we have reached out to the individual making the accusation and reported the matter to the appropriate civil authorities.”
The Archdiocese of Chicago did not provide further details about the abuse allegations.
