Crowds have had to be turned away as the new Sydney Fish Market finally opened its doors today.

The city’s newest attraction, a staggering $836 million development, drew massive crowds on its opening day, with lines stretching well beyond the entrance.

Visitors have been advised that even those with reservations at the on-site restaurants need to queue up, or consider returning when the initial buzz subsides.

Boasting the title of the largest seafood market in the Southern Hemisphere, this venue features 42 retail outlets and 19 seafood wholesalers. Its grand debut faced numerous delays over the years.

Initially proposed in 2018, the market was originally expected to open in 2023 with a projected cost of $250 million.

Around six million people are expected to visit the market each year, with NSW Premier Chris Minns saying he believed it would appeal to everyone.

“While food enthusiasts are likely to come from far and wide, it’s crucial that this market also serves local families who simply want to enjoy a meal of fish and chips with their kids on a warm summer day,” remarked a spokesperson.

“Whether you’re coming here for caviar, or crab sticks, or some kind of exotic platter, this place will have something for everybody.”

The building sits on Blackwattle Bay next to the old Sydney Fish Market in Glebe.

The trading hours for the general public will be 7am to 10pm on weekdays, extending to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
