A young surfer narrowly escaped injury today after a shark took a significant bite out of his surfboard at Dee Why Beach, located near Dee Why Point. The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m., according to local authorities.

The boy, assisted by lifesavers present at the scene, managed to walk away from the frightening encounter without any injuries.

Experts from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development have analyzed the bite marks on the board. Their assessment suggests that the attack was likely carried out by a bull shark.

In response to the incident, department teams, along with local lifesavers and the council, have mobilized to ensure public safety.

To keep the area secure, jet skis are currently patrolling the waters, while a drone surveys the scene from above. These safety measures will continue into tomorrow.

Dee Why Beach has been closed for at least 24 hours.

All other ocean beaches on the Northern Beaches, except for Palm Beach, remained closed today due to dangerous surf conditions.

Swimmers are advised to be careful, avoid the beaches, and stay clear of low-visibility and murky water.

He suffered serious injuries to both legs and was pulled from the water by his friends and emergency services. 

He is fighting for his life at Sydney Children’s Hospital.
