In a tragic incident in Texas, a 7-year-old boy suffered severe injuries, including the loss of a leg, after a drunk driver crashed into his family’s car, causing him to be thrown 60 feet from the vehicle, according to police reports. The boy’s mother recalled finding her son surrounded by blood on the ground.

“When I saw him there, I feared for his life,” Ruksara Abbasova shared with Fox affiliate KDFW, reflecting on the New Year’s Day accident in Dallas involving her son, Saeed.

Initially confused by the scene, she described her shock: “I couldn’t tell where all the blood was coming from—his head, back, or internal injuries. But once I saw his entire body, I realized his leg was gone.”

Authorities report that 23-year-old Michael McRae was under the influence and speeding when he collided with the family’s car on the Central Expressway after New Year’s Eve festivities. The collision caused the vehicle to overturn, severely injuring Saeed, per KDFW.

After being rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors performed an emergency procedure to amputate what remained of Saeed’s leg. From his hospital bed, he expressed his sorrow to KDFW, saying, “I am so sad. I lost my leg.”

The child, however, noted how he was lucky to have survived such a severe crash.

“The main thing is that I’m alive,” Saeed said. “I’m with you, mom. With my family. I know that I will be good. I will be better.”

Police say witnesses spotted McRae weaving through lanes while speeding for several miles, KDFW reports. Saeed, who turned 8 just days after the crash, was sitting in the back of his family’s vehicle.

“I saw my husband, I saw my daughter, I didn’t see my son,” Abbasova said about the initial moments after the crash. “Someone hit us, and after that the car start to flip.”

The heartbroken mother added, “It’s tragedy for me. Tragedy. Because do you know how to see your child in this condition? You want to take his pain to you, you want to take his injuries to you. But you can’t.”

McRae is facing charges of intoxication, assault with serious bodily injury, failure to maintain financial responsibility, and resisting arrest. He is currently out on bond and awaiting his next court date, KDFW reports.
