HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (WLS) — A major traffic incident occurred in western Michigan on Monday, where slippery roads led to a massive collision involving over 100 vehicles, according to local law enforcement.

Authorities from the Michigan State Police reported that approximately twelve individuals sustained injuries in the crash on westbound Interstate 196 near Hudsonville, just outside Grand Rapids. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

The section of I-196 between 32nd Avenue and 64th Street has been closed to traffic as a result.

Investigations into the accident, which took place at around 10:20 a.m., are being conducted by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Drivers in the vicinity are advised to steer clear of the area for the time being.

The highway is expected to be closed for several hours during clean-up, police said.

Temperatures are frigid throughout much of the Midwest Monday.

Lake-effect snow also caused whiteout conditions near Grand Rapids earlier Monday.

Indiana State Police said multiple vehicles were involved in a crash on the Indiana Toll Road, as well.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes were closed but have since reopened. The crashes occurred in the westbound lanes between mile markers 67.1 and 67.2.

Indiana State Police say blowing snow reduced visibility, which led to the chain-reaction crash that halted traffic in both directions.

Some injuries have been reported, but none are believed to be life-threatening.

The incident happened just before noon Monday in St. Joseph County, Indiana.
