During an interview with NBC News on Monday, President Trump refrained from confirming whether he would employ military force to gain control of Greenland.

When asked about the matter, the president opted for a “no comment” response, while he continues to advocate for the United States to acquire Greenland, a territory under Denmark’s jurisdiction.

Trump expressed a strong commitment to imposing new tariffs on Denmark and other European nations if negotiations over Greenland do not yield a deal, stating he is “100 percent” ready to proceed with the tariffs.

These tariffs, scheduled for implementation on February 1, would impact countries including Norway. In a controversial letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump seemed to associate his attempts to acquire Greenland with not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. However, Støre and others have clarified that the Nobel Prize is determined by an independent committee, not by the Norwegian government.

In the NBC News interview, Trump contested that claim, asserting, “Norway totally controls it despite what they say.” He also mentioned that he is uninterested in the award itself.

Among the countries that would be affected by the Feb. 1 tariffs is Norway. In a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that has drawn heavy scrutiny, Trump appeared to link his threats to acquire Greenland to his having not been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize — though Støre and others have stressed that the prize is awarded by an independent committee, and not by the Norwegian government.

Trump in the NBC News interview disputed that, saying “Norway totally controls it despite what they say.” He also told the outlet that he doesn’t care about the prize.

Trump’s efforts have drawn significant pushback from European allies and top figures in the U.S. Trump is set to address the World Economic Forum annual meeting this week in Davos, Switzerland, where global leaders are descending amid the tensions.
