Carson Beck in handshake drama after devastating interception sealed Miami's national championship hopes

For Miami’s quarterback Carson Beck, skipping class was the least of his worries.

Numerous online sources suggested that Beck neglected to shake hands with Indiana’s quarterback, Mendoza, following Monday night’s 27-21 defeat. Video footage caught Beck swiftly retreating to the locker room after a heartbreaking interception sealed Miami’s fate.

Beck wrapped up the game with 232 passing yards, one touchdown, and the crucial fourth-quarter interception. Indiana clinched victory thanks to its staunch defense and a spectacular touchdown run by Mendoza.

In the final minute, Beck’s interception on Indiana’s side of the field brought an abrupt end to the Hurricanes’ season.

With that pivotal play, Indiana’s celebration kicked off, requiring only two kneel downs to conclude the match. The scene culminated with Indiana coach Curt Cignetti being doused in blue Gatorade as the clock ran out.

When the final whistle went off, Beck was seen running off into the locker room.

Beck is projected to have made north of $3 million while at Miami this season as a sixth-year redshirt senion, and told reporters he’s not been attending classes since graduating from college in 2023.

Beck and his then-girlfriend Hanna Cavinder had their cars stolen last February, with Beck losing a Lamborghini and Mercedes in the thievery.

“This year at Miami was the best of my life,” Beck said after his team fell short of its ultimate goal of a national title.

While Beck has come under fire, Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. ran over to Mendoza and shook his hand while Beck kept his helmet on and exited the field.

“For it to end like that is hard. It’s really tough, but again, a group that has faced so much adversity, to have that opportunity to win at the end says a lot about this team and about us,” Beck said.

Beck now heads into preparation for the NFL Draft, where he is ranked by ESPN’s Mel Kiper as the No. 5 quarterback, behind Penn State’s Drew Allar, Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss, Alabama’s Ty Simpson and Mendoza.
