Nationwide walkouts planned as Trump marks 1 year back in office

(NewsNation) — Across the nation, a massive wave of protesters is anticipated to participate in demonstrations on Tuesday, as discontent with President Donald Trump’s first year back in office gathers momentum into an organized movement.

The organizers behind the Free America Walkout have called on individuals to leave their work, schools, and refrain from shopping to protest the administration’s policies during the initial year of Trump’s return to the presidency.

These protests specifically target Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, presidential decisions impacting immigrants and transgender individuals, as well as heightened government surveillance. The organizers aim to create significant disruption to compel the administration to pay attention.

More than 800 walkouts planned nationwide

According to the organizers, more than 800 events are scheduled nationwide, spanning all 50 states. Over 38,000 participants are expected to join rallies in cities ranging from Tampa to Los Angeles to New York City.

At 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday, protesters across the country plan to pause their daily activities as part of the “Free America” movement. The movement carries the slogan: “In the face of fascism, we will be ungovernable.”

Organizers said the action is designed to interrupt normal routines, not just draw crowds.

The demonstrations come in the wake of the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, 37, by an ICE officer in Minnesota, which organizers argue has become a rallying point.

The Women’s March, one of the groups behind the effort, said walkouts are also planned internationally, including in Canada, France, Italy and the Netherlands.

With tensions still high around immigration protests, questions remain about public safety. Officials said they were expecting peaceful protests, and the Women’s March said it has a clear nonviolence policy in place.

Protests have surpassed those in Trump’s first term, data shows

Last summer’s “No Kings” demonstrations drew an estimated 5 million people nationwide. While most demonstrations were peaceful, some clashes led to arrests, serious injuries and one death. Officials have stressed that those incidents were the exception, not the rule.

In the year since Trump’s second term began, the number of protests in the U.S. has surpassed those seen at the same point in his first administration, according to data from the Crowd Counting Consortium.

According to the data, more than 10,700 protests occurred in 2025, a 133% increase from the 4,588 recorded during Trump’s first term in 2017. A majority of U.S. counties, including 42% that voted for Trump, have seen at least one protest since his second inauguration, the data showed.

Organizers said Tuesday’s actions will serve as a test of whether weekday walkouts can apply meaningful pressure on the Trump administration.

Tuesday marks one year since Trump was sworn in for his second term. NewsNation will air a special edition of “CUOMO” with analysis from Stephen A. Smith and Bill O’Reilly at 8 p.m. EST.
