In a heated exchange on Tuesday, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman responded sharply to Elon Musk after Musk warned users against ChatGPT on the platform X, attributing it to nine suicide cases.

Altman dismissed Musk’s assertions as misleading, turning the tables by highlighting the safety concerns surrounding Tesla’s Autopilot, which has been associated with over 50 fatalities, according to a report by SFist.

“You sometimes criticize ChatGPT for being overly restrictive, yet now you say it’s too lax,” Altman tweeted in a pointed three-paragraph response. “Reportedly, more than 50 people have died in crashes linked to Autopilot. I only experienced it once, some time ago, and my initial impression was that it wasn’t safe for Tesla to have released it,” he added.

Altman didn’t stop there, taking a jab at Musk’s own chatbot venture, Grok. He suggested that Musk “shouldn’t be talking when it comes to guardrails,” drawing attention to the competitor’s safety measures.

This exchange occurs amidst Musk’s ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI, where he alleges the company has strayed from its original nonprofit objectives. Reports indicate that Musk is pursuing damages that could reach up to $134 billion.
