A Tennessee woman is facing serious accusations of neglecting her elderly father, leading to severe health issues. The neglect was so extreme that pressure ulcers and bed sores on his body exposed three of his vertebrae, according to police reports. Additionally, she allegedly withheld his diabetes medication, causing his blood sugar to spike dangerously above 600.
Authorities in Knox County have charged 42-year-old Misty McDaniel with aggravated neglect of an elderly or vulnerable adult resulting in significant bodily harm. Local ABC affiliate WATE reports that her father had become bedridden after suffering a stroke nearly ten years ago.
In the last half-year, the father’s health deteriorated significantly, and McDaniel allegedly began neglecting his care. On January 2, he was hospitalized, with medical professionals discovering his blood sugar level was over 600, a condition that could induce a diabetic coma.
Medical evaluations revealed pressure ulcers and bed sores on his lower back and other areas, as detailed in court documents. He was admitted to a critical care unit where he underwent several surgeries to remove necrotic tissue and received additional treatment for the neglect-related conditions.
Residing in Knoxville, McDaniel was appointed as his caregiver but reportedly avoided taking him for necessary medical check-ups, despite his diabetes and other health issues. Reports from PBS affiliate WVLT indicate her husband was also responsible for assisting in his care.
According to police, McDaniel’s dad was behind on his diabetes medication when he arrived at the hospital. He had both muscles and bones exposed on his body due to the “extensive” bed sores and ulcers, WVLT reports.
Police went to McDaniel’s home, where she lives with her father and husband, and found a supply of blood sugar medication that was never given to the dad. She was taken into custody and charged on Jan. 17.
McDaniel’s bond was set at $75,000 for the neglect charge.
