BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — Amid an ongoing police investigation into a fatal shooting at a Bradenton medical lab, the sister of the victim is cherishing memories of her life. The community continues to grapple with the tragic loss of a beloved mother.
Authorities report that a gunman entered the lab, fatally shooting 29-year-old Myshaela Burnham. A co-worker who witnessed the attack also sustained gunshot wounds, according to investigators.
“The last conversation I had with her was at 12:51 on Thursday. The incident must have occurred right then or shortly after,” recounted Burnham’s sister, Brianna Fischer.
Those close to Burnham remember her for her radiant smile and the vibrant energy she brought into any space.
Police have identified the shooter as Burnham’s former boyfriend. In the wake of the tragedy, Fischer reflected on her initial disbelief as she struggled to piece together the events.
“Mass shooting can happen, so I did not think it was her ex-boyfriend. That is not where I immediately jumped to. I thought it was a random mass shooting,” Fischer said.
As investigators worked to piece together the events inside the lab, Fischer said she focused on remembering her sister beyond the circumstances of her death.
“Like her name was spelled, she was My Shayla. She was my Shayla,” she said.
Fischer described the loss as devastating for her family.
“He took my light. He took our vibrancy. And for me, he took everything from me,” she said.
Police said the suspect is facing a murder charge. The other victim remains hospitalized.
There is a GoFundMe set up to help with the mother’s funeral arragements.
