Renowned finance expert and social commentator, Gehgeh, has ignited a lively debate online with his fervent defense of the late Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

In a thought-provoking video currently making waves on social media, Gehgeh passionately urged President Bola Tinubu to enact a stringent law aimed at safeguarding Fela’s legacy from public disparagement.

Call For Legal Protection Of Fela’s Legacy

Gehgeh emphasized in his message that Fela’s monumental contributions to music and African culture warrant eternal reverence. He boldly asserted, “President Tinubu should make it a law in Nigeria; anyone who disparages Fela should be sentenced to life imprisonment.”

Despite ongoing efforts by some to minimize Fela’s influence, Gehgeh insists that Fela’s global relevance remains undiminished, underscoring the need for continued respect for the legendary musician.

According to him, Fela remains relevant worldwide despite attempts by some people to downplay his impact.

“Talking Down On Fela Is Talking Down On Afrobeat”

Gehgeh argued that many Nigerians do not truly understand the depth of Fela’s influence.

He said, “Many people don’t understand the influence of Fela. Talking down on Fela means talking down on Afrobeat.”

He insisted that Afrobeat would not have gained global recognition without Fela’s creativity and courage.

Wizkid Cited As Example

Using Grammy-winning singer Wizkid as an example, Gehgeh claimed modern artistes benefit directly from Fela’s invention.

He said, “If we remove Afrobeat from Wizkid, he doesn’t have any sound of his own.”

Gehgeh added that Wizkid is recognised internationally as an Afrobeat artiste, a genre he stressed was invented by Fela.

“Make Me President For One Day”

In a lighter but controversial moment, Gehgeh joked about leadership and strict governance.

He said, “Can they make me President of Nigeria for one day, then you people will see law.”

His comments have continued to generate mixed reactions online, with supporters praising his defence of Fela, while critics described his suggestion as extreme.
