Traditionally, horror films have been overlooked by the Oscars, but this year could be different. On Thursday, the 98th Academy Awards nominations will be revealed, and Ryan Coogler’s vampire-themed film, “Sinners,” might make history.

The nominations are set to be announced at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time by presenters Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. Audiences can catch the live announcement on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the academy’s digital platforms, and ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Historically, no film has garnered more than 14 Oscar nominations, a record shared by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” However, “Sinners” has the potential to surpass this benchmark, with expected nominations for its impressive craftsmanship, Coogler’s exceptional writing and directing, and Michael B. Jordan’s standout performance, which could earn him his first nomination.

Another strong contender is Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” a father-daughter revolutionary comedy that’s been a dominant force this awards season. It is anticipated to achieve up to 14 nominations, including five or six in acting categories.

Regardless of the final nomination count, Warner Bros. is poised for an unprecedented Oscar performance in its long history of 102 years. The success of both “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” is expected to lead Warner Bros. to a record-breaking awards haul, even as the studio faces a potential sale to Netflix. This week, Netflix sweetened its $72 billion acquisition bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, opting for an all-cash offer, surpassing the competing bid from Paramount Skydance.

This year, the Oscars are introducing a new category for casting. That new honor will help “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” pad their already impressive stats.

Ten films will be nominated for best picture. Along with the two favorites, movies such as the Norwegian family drama “Sentimental Value,” the Shakespeare drama “Hamnet” and the table tennis odyssey “Marty Supreme” are expected to be in the mix.

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and will be televised live on ABC and Hulu. YouTube’s new deal to exclusively air won’t take effect until 2029. This year, Conan O’Brien will return as host.
