SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Effingham County School authorities are gearing up to adjust several school zones within the district for the upcoming academic year. This initiative is closely linked to the introduction of a new elementary school and efforts to tackle overcrowding issues.

Parents have another opportunity on Thursday evening to review the proposed boundary changes and their potential impact on their children. The redistricting strategy focuses on Creekside Elementary, which is scheduled to open its doors in the fall of 2026.

According to district officials, the steady growth over the years has caused many schools to exceed their capacity, prompting the need for redistricting. They emphasize that the plan aims to alleviate overcrowding while ensuring class sizes remain manageable.

The proposal involves relocating some neighborhoods to different elementary schools, while others will contribute to the enrollment at Creekside Elementary, which is anticipated to accommodate around 880 students. Families with children currently attending elementary school who are affected by these changes will have the option to keep their child at their existing school until fifth grade, provided they handle transportation themselves.

District leaders assure that they have meticulously examined transportation routes, travel distances, and previous redistricting effects to reduce any potential disruptions.

“I would say to all of our families, all of our schools are great schools. Redistricting, we understand, is a big deal for students, especially elementary students. So, we’ve done everything in our power to make this an easy transition, but also to allow families to stay at their current school if they want to,” said Tiffany Altman, the ECSD Communications Coordinator.

There is another public redistricting meeting today at 6 p.m. at Marlow Elementary School. Parents and residents can view proposed maps, ask questions, and provide comments.

District officials say the board will review all feedback and is expected to vote on a final plan in February.
