New city claims the title of busiest U.S. airport

Atlanta has long reigned as the busiest airport in the U.S., but that title has now changed hands.

WASHINGTON — In a surprising shift, Atlanta no longer boasts the nation’s busiest airport, as revealed by the latest data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to preliminary figures from the FAA, Chicago’s O’Hare Airport has emerged as the leader, with over 857,392 aircraft either landing or taking off over the past year—more than any other airport across the country. The complete statistics, including global rankings and full passenger data for 2025, are still awaited.

O’Hare Airport last held the title of the busiest airport in America back in 2019. Previously, Atlanta’s airport, serving as the primary hub for Delta Air Lines, consistently held the top spot.

Chicago’s Mayor, Brandon Johnson, expressed pride in this achievement, stating on Tuesday, “This is more than a mere number; it’s a testament to Chicago’s dynamic growth. From O’Hare’s bustling runways to our vibrant neighborhoods, Chicago is thriving, expanding, and setting a national benchmark. We are open for business, welcoming the world, and once again leading the way for the nation.”

The milestone comes as Chicago plans for a new Concourse D, scheduled for completion in late 2028. The $1.3 billion project will feature 19 gates and will help improve passenger capacity. O’Hare is a major hub for American Airlines and United Airlines.

For comparison, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport recorded 807,625 aircraft operations in 2025.

Preliminary global data expected in early spring is likely to reaffirm O’Hare’s claim to busiest airport. Later this summer, official rankings from the Airports Council International, the global authority on airport data, will be released.

The other top five airports in terms of flight operations were Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Denver International Airport in Colorado, and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.
