In a decisive ruling following a brief two-day trial, a Putnam County man has been handed a life sentence for a harrowing armed burglary that took place in 2024. The State Attorney’s Office confirmed the conviction.

PALATKA, Fla. — The convicted individual, Richard Hagans, was found guilty of deliberately crashing his vehicle into the home of his ex-girlfriend in May 2024, an act of aggression that the State Attorney’s Office characterized as intentional.

Chilling surveillance footage captured Hagans in a menacing pursuit, as he appeared to search for his ex-girlfriend while wielding a firearm. Fortunately, she managed to escape the immediate danger, seeking refuge at a neighbor’s residence where she promptly contacted emergency services.

Just two days after this terrifying incident, on May 22, Hagans was apprehended by the Palatka Police Department, according to records from the Putnam County jail.

According to Putnam County jail records, Hagans was arrested by the Palatka Police Department on May 22, two days after the initial crime.

The SAO says that a jury found Hagans guilty of burglary while armed, burglary of a dwelling or structure using a vehicle to cause damage and resisting an officer without violence.

“Another career criminal bites the dust,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said about the case. “Your prosecutors are committed to taking out the trash. You are safer for it.”
