Trump revokes invitation for Canada to join Board of Peace

In a surprising move on Friday, former President Donald Trump rescinded Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation to join his proposed Board of Peace. This decision comes shortly after Carney expressed his disapproval of Trump’s suggested tariffs against Europe, which were a reaction to European resistance to Trump’s ambition to annex Greenland.

Trump communicated his decision via Truth Social, addressing Carney directly: “Dear Prime Minister Carney, consider this letter as formal notification that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation for Canada to join what is destined to be the most distinguished assembly of leaders ever.”

Reuters recently reported that Carney had confirmed receiving an invitation to join the board last week.

Trump’s invitation list for the board included several prominent global figures such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Argentinian President Javier Milei. The board, under Trump’s leadership, is intended to manage and rehabilitate Gaza as part of his extensive 20-point peace initiative aimed at maintaining the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Carney had previously voiced concerns regarding the allocation of the $1 billion membership fee required to join the board. On Sunday, he remarked that Canada was keen on ensuring that any financial contributions would be utilized for maximum effectiveness.

“We still do not have unimpeded aid flows, humanitarian aid flows at scale to the people in Gaza,” he said. “That is a precondition for moving forward on this.”

Carney criticized Trump’s threat to impose 10% tariffs on Denmark and other countries amid the U.S. president’s calls to acquire Greenland. Trump later lifted those tariffs after he and NATO leaders crafted the “framework” of a deal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, for the U.S. to use the island territory for military and mineral rights purposes.

“On Arctic sovereignty, we stand firmly with Greenland in Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland’s future,” Carney said in Davos on Tuesday. “Our commitment to NATO’s Article 5 is unwavering, so we’re working with our NATO allies, including the Nordic-Baltic Eight to further secure the alliance’s northern and western flanks, including through Canada’s unprecedented investments in over-the-horizon radar, in submarines and aircraft and boots on the ground — boots on the ice.”

Trump gave a speech the following day and at one point sent a message to Carney that Canada “lives because of the United States.”

“We’re building a Golden Dome that’s going to, just by its very nature, going to be defending Canada,” Trump said. “Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should be grateful also, but they’re not. I watched your prime minister yesterday, he wasn’t so grateful.”

“But they should be grateful to us, Canada,” the president added. “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, before you make your statements.”

Carney reacted to those remarks on Thursday, writing on the social platform X that “Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership, in the economy, in security, and in rich cultural exchange.”

“But Canada doesn’t ‘live because of the United States,’” he wrote. “Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”

The Hill has reached out to the White House and Carney’s office for comment on Trump’s Friday post.
