A man from Saltville, Virginia, was found guilty on Thursday in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on June 5, 2025.

Skylar Hughes, 26, faced charges of second-degree murder and using a firearm during a felony following a shooting incident on Dry Cove Lane in Saltville.

According to the Smyth County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, evidence revealed that Hughes fatally shot 28-year-old Michael Stonewall Blevins, also from Saltville, after Blevins refused to leave Hughes’ property.

Hughes admitted guilt to both charges without any plea agreement in place, as stated in the official release.

“Today is about honoring the life and memory of Michael Stonewall Blevins. While no verdict can undo the loss suffered by Michael’s loved ones, this conviction affirms that his life mattered and those who take a life will be held accountable,” remarked Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip “Bucky” Blevins. “Now, Michael’s family can rest – knowing his killer cannot appeal this conviction and will forever be on the registry as a [murderer].”

According to the release, in exchange for his guilty plea, Hughes’ sentencing will fall within applicable state guidelines for a range of 5-20 years.

“The men and women of our law enforcement community are second to none – my office and I are grateful for their diligent work and professionalism that led directly to this conviction,” Blevins said in the release.

Hughes’ sentencing will be held on May 7.
