Discover Florida's Latest Gem: Explore the Stunning New State Park Now Open to Visitors

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida’s natural landscape enthusiasts now have a fresh destination to discover, as the state’s newest park has officially opened its gates. The announcement was made on Friday, marking an exciting addition for outdoor adventurers.

Shoal River Headquarters State Park is situated just to the west of DeFuniak Springs. Spanning 2,480 acres, the park offers a picturesque setting with its undulating sandy hills and towering pine canopies. The park’s serene streams feed into the Shoal River, creating a tranquil environment for visitors.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking along the park’s trails while observing the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area. The park is home to a variety of species, including deer, turkeys, snakes, skunks, and the uncommon gopher tortoise, providing a rich tapestry of nature for visitors to appreciate.

Although camping facilities are not yet available, state officials are considering the possibility of introducing camping as well as other recreational activities such as paddling in the future, enhancing the park’s appeal and accessibility.

“Shoal River Headwaters is a special place today, and it will only get better as we plan thoughtfully for recreation and conservation,” said Florida State Parks Director Chuck Hatcher. “Our goal is to ensure visitors can enjoy it for decades to come while protecting its remarkable habitats.”

As a designated state park, Shoal River Headquarters will also help protect the natural habitat of threatened and endangered plant and animal species, and aid in maintaining the quality of wetlands and waterways, according to state officials.

The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year. Parking is available at $4 per car, or $2 per bicycle, according to the Florida State Parks website.

Last fiscal year, Florida State Parks welcomed more than 28 million visitors, contributing an estimated $3.6 billion in statewide economic impact.

Shoal River Headquarters is a part of the Upper Shoal River Florida Forever project and was acquired in partnership with Trust for Public Land. Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet approved the acquisition during a cabinet meeting.

According to Trust for Public Land, Shoal River Headquarters is now the 176th Florida State Park.

“I am so excited that another tract of Walton County’s natural beauty is being preserved in Shoal River Headwaters State Park,” said Florida Representative Shane G. Abbott. “This new state park will ensure that future generations have the same opportunities to enjoy the natural Florida that I did growing up.”
