The city of Minneapolis finds itself engulfed in turmoil once again following the tragic shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti by a federal agent. This incident has ignited a wave of protests as the community reacts to the unsettling events that unfolded on Saturday.

Protesters took to the streets shortly after the shooting, galvanized by the circulation of several videos capturing Pretti’s final moments. These videos paint a vivid picture of the tense encounter that escalated to violence.

The 37-year-old Pretti was fatally shot after a confrontation with federal agents just past 9 a.m. The altercation, caught on video, shows officers wrestling him to the ground near 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue before gunshots were fired, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s consciousness.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Pretti was armed with a gun equipped with two magazines. The agency has asserted that the Border Patrol agent involved in the shooting acted in self-defense, a claim that is central to the ongoing discourse surrounding the incident.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that Pretti was armed with a gun containing two magazines. The agency stated that the Border Patrol agent who shot him was acting defensively.

However, the narrative has been queried by other officials, including Governor Tim Walz following a review of the footage.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the person shot was a US citizen who had a license to carry a gun. So far footage does not appear to show him drawing any weapon although video from the ground is unclear.

A flurry of videos have since emerged as the community grapples the third shooting to involve federal agents in the city in a matter of weeks.

A Minneapolis man who was gunned down during a struggle with federal agents has been identified by local media as Alex Jeffrey Pretti

An initial video showed agents wrestling the man to the ground before one federal agent fired multiple shots into his chest, after which the agents scattered.

At least four agents were seen confronting Pretti on the sidewalk. An unidentified agent was see smacking Pretti’s body while he was on the ground.

A popping sound can be heard and Pretti appears to be still on the ground as the agents quickly dispersed.

Someone, who appeared to be inside a nearby store,  said: ‘Oh s***. What the f*** they killed him. Did they kill that guy?

‘Not again! Are you f**king kidding me? That guy’s dead!’

A second video filmed from inside a car on the street was directly in front of the confrontation.

Cars honked as the vehicle held up traffic as agents and Pretti got into a scuffle.

Pretti appeared to be standing with his phone up to his chest as agents surrounded him.

As the car drove past, Pretti appeared to be saying something to agent as they stepped backward toward the sidewalk.

A third video showed a group of protesters on the street blowing whistles.

Agents were seen shoving a protester into a snow bank. A woman started screaming as an agent appeared to grab ahold of her coat and drag her across the frozen ground.

‘What the f*** is wrong with you, honestly?’ the woman filming can be heard asking.

The woman being dragged was able to get away as agent swooped in on Pretti, who appeared to try and help the woman.

An agent appeared to pepper spray on Pretti as he shielded the woman.

Agents dragged Pretti to the ground as he tried to fight them off. Multiple agents worked to detain him.

The struggle continued until multiple popping sounds went off.

Pretti’s body was seen laying still on the ground as the woman filming screamed and other protesters dispersed, as well as agents.

‘What did you just do?’ the woman screamed. ‘What the f*** did you just do?’

Agents created a semi-circle around an immobile Pretti as protesters screamed in horror.

Agents appeared to attempt life-saving measures as they kept close to his body as protesters inched forward.

The woman filming grew emotional as agents worked as federal agents worked to keep the crowd back.

A fourth video showed agents pushing a woman and roughhousing Pretti as cars honked.

An agent appeared to fling an arm at Pretti as he stepped between the agent and the woman, who was thrown to the ground.

Pretti put an open hand up to block his face as the agent sprayed pepper spray on him.

As an agent moved to go after the woman again, Pretti appeared to bend over to protect her, causing agents to rip him backward by his jacket.

Several agents then surrounded him and began hitting him while he was on the ground.

Moments later, several gunshots can be heard going off as agents began scrambling away from Pretti’s body.

DHS has since shared its account of the shooting on X, saying the deadly incident began as a ‘targeted operation against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault.’

‘An individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun,’ the department wrote. ‘The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted.’

‘Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene,’ the statement added.

‘The suspect also had two magazines and no ID – this looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.’

DHS also wrote that ‘about 200 rioters arrived at the scene and began to obstruct and assault law enforcement,’ leading to the deployment of crowd-control measures.
