Monty Don, the cherished host of ‘Gardeners’ World,’ recently received an outpouring of support after revealing the passing of his beloved dog, Peggy. Taking to Instagram, Monty shared a heartfelt tribute alongside a photo of Peggy. “Peggy died yesterday,” he wrote. “She was an old lady—just shy of her 16th birthday—and passed away as she lived: gently and without fuss. She was eccentric, quirky, infinitely gentle and loving, and will be missed terribly. She now rests in the coppice alongside Nigel, Nell, and our other dogs.”

Fans quickly extended their sympathies. One expressed, “RIP dear Peggy,” while another added, “So sorry to hear this. You must have given her a wonderful life.” Another follower shared, “I am sorry for your loss,” and yet another wrote, “I’m so sorry, Monty. Dogs hold such a special place in our lives.” Besides Peggy, Monty is known for his golden retriever, Ned, the current canine star of ‘Gardeners’ World,’ and Patti, who seldom appears on screen.

Monty’s love for his dogs is well-known, with many of his past pets making appearances alongside him on ‘Gardeners’ World.’ The late Nigel and Nellie were beloved fixtures of the popular BBC show. Nigel passed away in 2020, and Monty shared with fans, “I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died. Up to the end, he was happy, healthy, and his usual calm, lovely self. But he was suddenly taken ill.”

Nellie followed in 2023, with Monty reflecting on Instagram, “I remember her not with sadness but gratitude for the way she enriched my life.”

Monty has also shared his affection for dogs in a blog post about creating dog-friendly gardens. He wrote, “Having lived with dogs all my life, it is completely natural for me to be accompanied by a dog or two wherever I am in the garden. It is as much their garden as it is mine or any other family member’s.”

“Something that I take for granted is that, by and large, they do absolutely no damage and respect the garden completely. They (rarely) dig holes or crash through the flower beds. They do treat the long paths as bowling alleys down which they career in chase of the ball that we are obliged to throw, but it is harmless enough.

“The coppice holds the graves, marked by headstones, of Beaufort, Red, Poppy and Barry, as well as the two cats Stimpy and Blue. They all enriched our lives immeasurably, and are now all a permanent part of the garden that they loved.”
