Gachiakuta Season 1 immerses audiences in a starkly divided universe, featuring the opulent Sphere above and the refuse-laden Pit below. In this dystopian setting, the affluent discard their waste into the Pit, where it transforms into lethal anima-powered Trash Beasts. At the heart of this narrative is Rudo Surebrec, a teen from the impoverished slums with a talent for mending broken objects. His life takes a dramatic turn when a personal tragedy propels him on a relentless quest for vengeance. The anime faithfully adapts the initial chapters of the manga, illustrating Rudo’s descent into the Pit and his fierce battles alongside Cleaners against Raiders and Trash Beasts.

Gachiakuta Season 1 begins with a pivotal and brutal murder that sets the entire story in motion. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that no character is truly safe from harm. Even those typically protected by plot armor fall victim to beasts, poisons, and enemy assaults, underscoring the pervasive danger that looms over them. These deaths are intertwined with hidden truths, such as the enigmatic Watchman Series and the mysterious trash powers. Each loss significantly impacts Rudo, transforming him from a grieving boy into a resilient warrior who wields discarded items as formidable weapons.

The series opens with the crucial event that propels Rudo on his journey. In the unforgiving slums, Regto serves as Rudo’s foster father and mentor, teaching him the value of repurposing trash and maintaining hope. One fateful evening, after delivering a gift to his dear friend Chiwa, Rudo returns home to a devastating scene: Regto lies mortally wounded, a masked assailant standing over him. The attacker steals a unique Watchman Series book, and with his dying breath, Regto urges Rudo to escape and repair their fractured world.

Regto’s Murder Kicks Off the Story of Gachiakuta

Gachiakuta opens with the key death that launches Rudo’s path. Regto serves as Rudo’s foster dad in the rough slums. He guides Rudo on reusing trash and keeping hope alive. One evening, Rudo returns from handing out a gift to his close friend, Chiwa. He spots Regto stabbed and bleeding on the ground. A masked figure is responsible for the deed, the killer grabbing a special Watchman Series book as Regto’s final words urge Rudo to flee and fix their broken world.

Regto’s tragic loss crushes Rudo, but society thinks Rudo is responsible for Regto’s death, and they give him a common punishment: he’s tossed right into the Pit. Regto’s end fuels Rudo’s rage against the unfair setup of their world and the Sphere, marking how the elite crush the poor without facts. Rudo somehow survives the fall into the Pit. However, Trash Monsters and a lot of bad people await him there. Regto’s death was a sad one as Rudo didn’t have anybody by his side other than him. While a tragic loss, however, it was very much needed to push Gachiakuta’s story forward.

Gob’s Passing Sparks Remlin’s Character Arc

In Canvas Town, the Cleaners seek a spellcaster for protection spells. While doing so, they learn that Gob, the town’s artist and a Giver, died that morning from body pollution. Gob often ditched his mask in toxic spots, leading to his end. Before his passing, however, Gob had picked Remlin Tysark as his replacement. Gob saw big promise in Remlin and passed on the sacred pen, the vital instrument “Jinki” to him. At first, Remlin, a young non-binary kid, grieved deeply. However, while Gob’s death shocked the group, it did spark Remlin’s growth.

Gob’s end shows the risks in the Pit’s poisoned air, although his legacy lives on through Remlin’s art and spells. His character adds weight to the Cleaners’ trip and highlights Canvas Town’s creative spirit amid loss. Gob’s death was also very necessary for Remlin’s growth, as every Giver is different, has their own strong points and unique sense of creativity. As is the case for Remlin, the vital instrument has been passed down for generations of Givers, but each one of them was their own, unique person.

Noerde Sacrifices Herself For the Raiders

Among Gachiakuta’s Raiders, Noerde Hew Amozo stands out as a proud fighter with electric hair powers as a Giver. She hails from the wiped-out Sileia tribe and her death ramps up the feud between the groups, showing the Raiders’ ruthless drive. Noerde’s vital instrument, a comb named Mirei, charges her long hair with static shocks. In a heated battle against the Cleaners, Noerde faces Riyo Reaper. Riyo beats her in close combat and shoots her with a gun from her assassin days. Hurt but fierce, Noerde triggers her Last Burst move.

With that, Noerde unleashes a huge burst of electricity that zaps the Cleaners and burns her hair away, all so she can stall the Cleaners as long as possible in the flying trash beast. As her locks vanish, Noerde gazes at the sky, content with her stand and sees something, perphaps the truth about why no one can cross the border. Then, Noerde falls, and her body lands crushed under debris, still clutching her comb. Noerde’s end proves her loyalty to the Raiders and Leader Zodyl honors her choice to hold the line alone.

Other than the character deaths already covered above, many core characters almost died in Gachiakuta Season 1. Among these are Rubion Gris, Nijiku Zanka, and Amo. Gris almost died saving Rudo in the fight against the Raider Jabber. At the moment, it actually really felt like Gris had died, which would have been an unbearable loss not only for Rudo and the Cleaners but also for the audience. Thankfully, however, Gris was just injured and managed to make it out alive.

Zanka dodged death when he faced the Raider Jabber in the flying trash beast. Jabber went all out against Zanka and beat him pretty badly. Not only did Zanka face heavy injuries, he was also gravely poisoned. When that episode aired, it genuinely felt like Zanka wouldn’t make it out alive but, thankfully, he did. Later on, it was revealed that Zanka only faced such severe injuries because Remlin, the spellcaster, pulled a prank and didn’t cast the right defensive spell on him, which added another later to the story.

Finally, towards the ending, Amo seemed to die in a major scrap. Jabber hit her, and she vanished. However, the final moments of Gachiakuta Season 1’s last episode revealed how that was far from the case as fans saw Amo alive but sitting chained in a dim cell. A figure emerged, probably Tamsy from the Cleaners, as the betrayer. This turn twists the story, ending Season 1 on a cliffhanger and heightening anticipation for Gachiakuta Season 2.
