The initial days of a new school term are typically set aside exclusively for staff preparations. However, some students may begin returning to their classrooms as early as tomorrow, following a six-week holiday break.

In New South Wales, the first term officially kicks off on February 2.

Throughout NSW, school zone speed limits are generally enforced from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and again from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

It’s important to note that certain schools in NSW have different school zone times.

Motorists caught exceeding the 40 km/h speed limit in these zones can face penalties, including fines of up to $3,242 and the addition of seven demerit points to their driving record.

NSW Transport executive director Chadi Chalhou said the school zone speed limit will be enforced by police and speed cameras in the school zones.

He warned that children can often be “unpredictable” and urged motorists to drive carefully around schools.

“We want motorists to slow down and look out for school children to avoid any road incidents,” Chalhou said.

“The message is simple: stick to the school zone speed limit, keep our kids safe, keep the demerits points off your license and keep the money in your pocket.”

School zone hours and limits vary across each Australian state and territory.
