SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Embracing the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the University of Illinois Springfield recently hosted a community event to pay tribute to his enduring impact. On Friday, students, faculty, and local residents collaborated to compile care packages for those facing hardship.

The UIS student union became a hub of activity as volunteers spent the afternoon meticulously organizing and packing a variety of essential items. These care packages were thoughtfully assembled with snacks for schoolchildren and personal hygiene products for individuals without stable housing.
