This morning on The View, actress Yerin Ha received valuable advice from Whoopi Goldberg during a candid discussion.
Ha appeared on the show alongside her Bridgerton co-star Luke Thompson, just days ahead of the much-anticipated premiere of Season 4 on Netflix. In the upcoming season, Ha takes on the role of Sophie, marking her first romantic lead and the series’ first East-Asian lead character. During the conversation, Sara Haines prompted Ha to discuss the “imposter syndrome” she battled throughout the production.
Originally from Australia, Ha confessed that she “never envisioned herself” in a romantic lead role, which partly motivated her move to Korea for further studies. She admitted that she “didn’t believe” a successful career in the entertainment industry was possible for her in Australia or Hollywood.
“It’s an ongoing challenge for me,” Ha explained. “I have a tendency towards perfectionism, always striving to do better, not just for myself but to pave the way for those who come after me. I want to do well, and with that ambition comes a certain amount of pressure.”
In response, Whoopi Goldberg offered reassurance, saying, “People might try to make you feel like you don’t belong in a romantic role with a white actor. But let’s be honest—I’ve been there before. You’ll be just fine.”
After Ha thanked Goldberg for her assurance, Ana Navarro teased, “She means in real life, by the way.”
Nonetheless, Goldberg continued connecting with Ha, explaining that “people will always try to make you feel like their idea of what it is is all that there is.”
“When you read a book, the book sort of gives you guidelines,” she added. “But when you make a film, we actors can do anything. So if you’re playing someone in love, that’s what you’re playing.”
Ha agreed, “Exactly, yeah. Period.”
Goldberg reiterated, “You’re fine.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC. Bridgerton Season 4, Part 1 premieres on Thursday, Jan. 29 on Netflix.
