Minnesota Gov. Walz says President Trump agreed to consider reducing federal agents in the state

On Monday, President Donald Trump appeared to shift his approach, contrasting his earlier threats to use the Insurrection Act to deploy federal troops in Minnesota.

MINNEAPOLIS β€” President Trump announced a newfound alignment with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz regarding the presence of federal agents in the state, suggesting they are now β€œon the same page.”

Trump mentioned this development in a post on Truth Social, noting he had spoken with the governor.

This discussion follows an incident involving ICE agents who shot three individuals in Minneapolis, resulting in two fatalities. Previously, Trump had considered invoking the Insurrection Act in response to widespread protests filling the streets.

However, Monday’s remarks indicated a shift in his stance.

He announced border czar Tom Homan’s visit to Minnesota on Monday night and told Walz he’d have Homan “call him.”

“I told Governor Walz that I would have Tom Homan call him, and that what we are looking for are any and all Criminals that they have in their possession,” Trump stated in his post. “The Governor, very respectfully, understood that, and I will be speaking to him in the near future.”Β

The governor’s office also released a statement, calling the conversation with the president “productive.” Walz also said Trump agreed to talk to his immigration officials about allowing the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to conduct independent investigations into the recent shootings and to work out a plan to reduce the number of immigration officers in the state.

“The President agreed that he would talk to his Department of Homeland Security about ensuring the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is able to conduct an independent investigation, as would ordinarily be the case. The President also agreed to look into reducing the number of federal agents in Minnesota and working with the state in a more coordinated fashion on immigration enforcement regarding violent criminals,” the statement from the governor’s office read.

“The Governor reminded President Trump that the Minnesota Department of Corrections already honors federal detainers by notifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement when a person committed to its custody isn’t a U.S. citizen. There is not a single documented case of the department’s releasing someone from state prison without offering to ensure a smooth transfer of custody.”Β

Walz has repeatedly called for federal agentsβ€”including ICE and Border Patrolβ€”to leave Minnesota.Β
