In Tampa, Florida, the anticipation is building as seven skilled motorcycle officers from the Tampa Police Department prepare to showcase their talents at the upcoming Gasparilla parade. This group of officers has been diligently planning their routine for months, eagerly awaiting the chance to impress the crowds this Saturday.
Corporal Keith Brown from TPD’s Motor Unit shared his excitement with News Channel 8, stating, “It’s a tough team to join, so making it here is a significant achievement. The crowd’s enthusiasm is contagious, and we enjoy putting on a show for them.”
Even if the forecast predicts rain, the officers are ready to adapt and ensure the event goes off without a hitch.
“Rain slows everything down. Wet roads mean we need to take more precautions, moving slower to ensure safety,” Brown explained. “It might take a bit longer to position parade floats and dignitaries, but everyone is understanding of the situation.”
The Tampa Police Department has also highlighted a unique challenge: the abundance of bead necklaces scattered on the streets, which can pose hazards during the event.
“It can be a challenge because the bikes will wash out, the front tire will wash out on the beads,” Brown said.
However, they said that it’s not a hurdle they haven’t overcome in years past.
The seven officers will be riding police Harley-Davidsons.
“It’s about 1,000 pound motorcycle. When we put all the gear on it, it’s probably around 1,100 pounds. They do 120 miles an hour, which is the top speed,” Brown said.
