The panelists on The View responded with criticism towards First Lady Melania Trump following her comments on the anti-ICE demonstrations in Minneapolis.
During the January 27 broadcast, a segment featured Trump addressing the protests. She mentioned, “I know my husband, the president, had a productive conversation with the governor and mayor, coordinating efforts to maintain peace and prevent riots.” She then urged Minneapolis protesters, “I oppose violence, so please, if you protest, do so peacefully.”
Whoopi Goldberg was quick to make a sarcastic remark about Trump during the show.
“Who was that?” Goldberg joked. “She seems so familiar, yet I can’t place her. Who was that?”
Goldberg even turned to their executive producer, Brian Teta, for clarification. “That was the first lady,” he confirmed.
Sunny Hostin then pointed out that Trump appeared to be standing in front of a poster promoting her upcoming Amazon documentary Melania, which captures her life in the 20 days leading up to her husband’s inauguration. Goldberg noted that’s probably why she’s now speaking out “against violence.”
But she did not let up on ridiculing the first lady. The ladies of The View have been pointing out since the start of President Trump’s second term that Melania seemed to be making less public appearances with her husband and possibly living a separate life from him.
“I can’t remember the last time I saw her,” Goldberg joked. “So exciting.”
Before President Trump was reelected, Hostin speculated that Melania did not want him to win again.
“I think she hates him. We can all agree on that,” she said on The View in Oct. 2024 after Melania spoke out in favor of reproductive rights. “That’s a given. I also think that she wants to take him out. She does not want to be the first lady anymore.”
She continued, “She doesn’t want to be the first lady, she destroyed the Rose Garden. Who hates Christmas? Melania Trump hates Christmas. She doesn’t want to decorate for Christmas. She doesn’t want anything to do with him. She doesn’t want to sleep in the same room as him. She can’t tolerate him.”
Hostin speculated that this was Melania’s attempt at “undercutting his bid for the presidency because then she doesn’t have to deal with him anymore.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
