Urbana's Grant Services Initiative Empowers Community Through Strategic Support

The City of Urbana has unveiled an exciting opportunity for local nonprofits through a community service grant for 2027, aiming to bring significant and lasting benefits to the area.

This initiative is designed to aid nonprofit organizations that offer critical support to low-income families within Urbana.

Recently, a $588,000 state grant was secured for the revitalization of King Park in Urbana. Out of this fund, $200,000 is earmarked for services addressing domestic violence, while $100,000 is dedicated to supporting immigrant services. The remaining funds will be allocated to various other sectors, including education, employment, family support, and healthcare, based on identified community needs.

“Annually, we reassess the community’s needs and listen to what residents are saying,” explained Nicholas Olsen, who is currently serving as the interim grants division manager. “This year, we’ve specifically allocated funds for domestic violence and immigrant services in direct response to the urgent needs expressed by the community. Our aim is to tackle these specific issues while also providing for broader service eligibility.”

Other program services include senior services, violence prevention, youth services, homelessness prevention and special needs. Olsen said the main focus for the grant is getting feedback from the community and addressing what those needs are.
