What is Matt Lauer doing now? Inside the disgraced anchor’s life in hiding after being axed from NBC

Matt Lauer has largely retreated from public view, leading a low-key life since his controversial departure from the “Today” show eight years ago.

Recently, however, the former television personality has been thrust back into the limelight. Brooke Nevils, one of Lauer’s accusers, has revisited the traumatic events of 2014, when she claims Lauer raped her, in a new memoir excerpt. The excerpt, shared by The Cut from her forthcoming book “Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame and the Stories We Choose to Believe,” labels Lauer as a “monster.”

While Lauer has consistently insisted that their interactions were “mutual and completely consensual,” his career at NBC ended abruptly in November 2017. The network dismissed him amid a wave of sexual harassment allegations from several women, citing “inappropriate sexual behavior.”

Now 68, Lauer resides in the Hamptons, living away from the public eye. He owns a sprawling 25-acre estate in Sag Harbor. In 2022, he sold another opulent Hamptons property, which he had purchased from actor Richard Gere in 2016.

Lauer, 68, has been living a quiet life in the Hamptons since the scandal. He owns a 25-acre estate in Sag Harbor, and also sold his former lavish Hamptons estate in 2022 that he bought from Richard Gere in 2016.

He’s still in a relationship with girlfriend Shamin Abas, whom he’s been dating since late 2019 — after he finalized his divorce from his ex-wife, Annette Roque.

Lauer is “doing well in his private life” and is focused on spending time with his kids — Jack, 24, Romy, 22, and Thijs, 18 — and being a “good father” to them, People reported in November 2025.

Back in 2022, Lauer and Roque appeared to be in good spirits as they reunited for Romy’s high school graduation.

People also reported that Lauer was still angry with “the way he was treated by the industry” and “people he thought were his friends.”

Lauer has appeared to remain friendly with at least a few of his former “Today” colleagues, which through the years have included Meredith Vieira, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker.

Lauer reunited with Guthrie when he attended “Today” show producer Jennifer Long’s New York City wedding in December 2023 and brought Abas as his date. The wedding also put him face to face with Kotb, Roker, Craig Melvin and Sheinelle Jones, six years after he was fired from the morning show.

An insider told Page Six that “Lauer kept busy introducing his girlfriend to the guests at the party” and “the exchanges between him and his former colleagues were very cordial and friendly.”

“Savannah walked up to Matt before the ceremony and gave him a hug,” the insider added. “The two had a friendly conversation for a few minutes. Both were cordial and warm.”

As for if he’ll ever return to the public eye, a source told Page Six last month that Lauer’s “savvy publicist girlfriend” is keeping hope alive for his comeback.

“She is encouraging him to keep trying and she is definitely persistent,” the source told us. “There have been instances of second and third acts with other stars, so they think people will give him a chance.”

But a source familiar with NBC also told us last month, “He has enough money for the rest of his life that he does not have to work.”

“No one will hire him,” the source also said. “This story comes out once a year — the anniversary of when he was sacked. He raped a woman . . . You can’t come back from that.”

However, Lauer has at least one person on his side — former CNN journalist Don Lemon, who insisted that “the public misses him” and that “it’s the people inside the business who are afraid of” Lauer.

“I think that if he could come back to digital, he can set his own course,” Lemon said on the “Hollywood Raw” podcast in January 2025. “I think the general public would accept —  just me —  would accept Matt back.”
