Navitas Organics, a California-based company, has issued a recall for certain batches of its popular organic chia seeds due to potential salmonella contamination. This action follows a notification from the company’s supplier, prompting a precautionary recall to ensure consumer safety.
The affected product comes in eight-ounce packages, prominently marketed as a “plant-based superfood.” These chia seeds have been distributed nationwide, available for purchase online through platforms like Amazon, and in-store at Whole Foods and other major retailers.
Consumers should look out for the recalled product, identified by the UPC 858847000284. The lot codes, crucial for identifying the compromised packages, are located above the nutritional information on the packaging.
As a precautionary measure, the recall has been initiated even though, as of Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration has not reported any associated illnesses or adverse health events linked to the product.

Salmonella bacteria are a leading cause of infection in the U.S., and can cause serious illness or death among young children, adults over the age of 65 and people with a weakened immune system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The most common ways of contracting salmonella include eating contaminated food; drinking or having contact with contaminated water; and touching animals, animal poop and the environment where they live.
Symptoms usually include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.
Customers who purchased the seeds can return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Anyone with questions or a request for replacement is encouraged to call (855) 215-5702.
