JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Authorities have taken two suspects into custody following the fatal shooting of 55-year-old Kenneth Lockhart on Christmas Eve, as confirmed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
On the night of the incident, police were called to a scene on St. Augustine Road, close to Emerson Street, following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered Lockhart suffering from several gunshot wounds and, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries before medical help could arrive.
The investigation commenced immediately, with homicide detectives scrutinizing the area for clues. Surveillance cameras in the vicinity captured footage of Lockhart engaged in a heated exchange with two men, which escalated to the point where the suspects opened fire and then fled the scene.
Through this footage, 38-year-old Amen Mathis was identified as one of the assailants and was subsequently arrested early on Christmas morning.
The investigation continued, and 60-year-old Gregory Woods was identified as the second suspect. The U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Woods on Jan. 28.
Woods and Mathis are being held at the Duval County jail and are charged with 2nd-degree murder. They are each also charged with possessing guns as convicted felons.
